Are you really are who you say you are?

The transition from adolescence to adulthood involves developing a personal identity- a sense of self.  Write a response that describes you and explains what makes you uniquely you.  Consider you future goals and dreams; what you value in a friend; favorite pets;  preferred sports and hobbies; best-loved music, literature, movies, etc.  And most significantly, consider your views about the nature of the world, your place in it, and how you should live.

A lot of you are writing personal statements for your college applications right now and are being asked similar questions.  However, the difference between those essays and this blog posting is your audience- you are trying to sell yourself to those colleges in the hopes of admission; you don't have to sell yourself to me.  So be honest- to both yourself and to me.

If you feel uncomfortable placing your response on the blog for your classmates to see, you are welcome to email your response to the vcechsliterature@gmail.com address.

Due date:  Wednesday, November 21 by 12am (yes, midnight).  After that, it is late- no exceptions.

Reflections on Othello

So...now that we have finished reading Othello, it is time to apply the play to this unit's essential questions:

1.  Why do human bonds bring both pleasure and pain?
2.  How does Shakespeare portray the complex nature of relationships?

For this blog posting, you will apply Othello to the EQ's listed above.

Obviously, when we think about relationships in Othello, the first one that comes to mind is that of Othello and Desdemona- but keep in mind, there are several relationships and bonds that are at play in Othello, and they come in all shapes and sizes:  platonic, romantic, hostile, male and female, female and female, male and male.....and although many of the relationships in this play seem pretty straightforward, more often than not, they are rather complex.

As you respond, please keep in mind the following:
1.  This will be one of your first grades for this last marking period.  For some of you, every point counts.  In other words, do well.  How would I recommend you do well?  Ah, this brings me to the second point....
2.  You have a rubric that outlines exactly how I will be grading your posts.  It's been a while since we have done this type of writing; it might do you well to review it.

In other words, don't be lazy- do your best work.

Due date for posting:  Thursday, November 8 by 9:30 am.  After  that time, the late policy applies.  No exceptions.
