Are you really are who you say you are?

The transition from adolescence to adulthood involves developing a personal identity- a sense of self.  Write a response that describes you and explains what makes you uniquely you.  Consider you future goals and dreams; what you value in a friend; favorite pets;  preferred sports and hobbies; best-loved music, literature, movies, etc.  And most significantly, consider your views about the nature of the world, your place in it, and how you should live.

A lot of you are writing personal statements for your college applications right now and are being asked similar questions.  However, the difference between those essays and this blog posting is your audience- you are trying to sell yourself to those colleges in the hopes of admission; you don't have to sell yourself to me.  So be honest- to both yourself and to me.

If you feel uncomfortable placing your response on the blog for your classmates to see, you are welcome to email your response to the vcechsliterature@gmail.com address.

Due date:  Wednesday, November 21 by 12am (yes, midnight).  After that, it is late- no exceptions.

  1. I am really who I am. I believe this because I've learned to accept things for how they are. The fact that I am comfortable in my own skin and own beliefs, makes me unique. I'm a pro-choie type of guy. "If you like it, I love it." I like track, you like football. That's great. I love Nicki Minaj, you love Taylor Swift. Cool! We have our own likings and favorites. This is what makes us unique. My own qualities are my best attributes, and which sepereates me from everyone else. I believe that we have the choice to be our own person; therefore, I choose to live my life the way I want. So in the end, I am really who I say I am and I'm proud of it!

  2. Who am I? Am I just an eager learner, responsible adult, a sister, a daughter, or a servant of our Lord Jesus Christ? I consider myself to be all of these things. I have noticed that as I have matured as a young lady that I have strayed further and further away from home. A lot of things happen when I am not there, but nothing that my sisters can’t tell me about later. My twin, Jennie, might not look like me, but is the only person that knows me best. From the outside, it is hard to see the similarities, but deep down inside we have a special sister bond. This bond was created in the womb, and can never be broken. Good friends are sometimes hard to find, because I have a standard that all of friends have to meet. One standard is that they have to be loyal and the other is honest. I want to be able to trust my friends with my personal business and be able o provide reasonable advice. I consider myself to be a particular person. I don’t necessary “go with the flow”, because I have to rationalize whatever is going on. As the school years ends I have many things to be thankful, and these are things I continue to remind myself of everyday. These things are that. I am about to graduate high school, attend a four year university! I am scared! I am so tight knit with my friends and family here in town that by making this change in course will be very difficult. I keep telling myself that everything is going to be fine, and whatever happens is for the greater good. This optimism is granted to me through my faith in the Jesus Christ. I am a light in a world of darkness. I have the ability to make a difference wherever I go in this small town. Upon graduation I hope to travel to a foreign country. I believe that by gaining experience will only better help me in the future.

  3. I feel that I am coming into who I am supposed to be. At an earlier time I wanted to try to fit in with other people, but now that I am getting older I realize that I don’t really need to fit in. That is the reason why I stay to myself most of the time. Now I am beginning to form my own ideas without just following the ideas of the crowd. I feel that I am a genuinely nice person until I have to go to another level and let people know that I mean business. That is what makes me unique because I feel that many people underestimate me, and I show them that I don’t take bull from anyone. My future goal is to just make my mother proud and to be able to take care of her the way she has taken care of me. Music to me is a universal language so I listen to pretty much anything, but I would have to say that I really love Erykah Badu. When I watch movies or television I watch pretty much everything that is on because I just sit and watch and sometimes I try to take away something from what I watch.

  4. The transition from adolescence to adulthood has changed my personal identity from what I would have considered my former self, however I am still uniquely me. I see my self as normal guy, but not a missed face in the crowd. I am very outgoing and willing to speak to anyone about anything. Also, I feel like I'm intelligent and athletic; I carry a broad range of interests and I have my own personal beliefs about the world and how I want to live in it. I am fine with playing almost any sport but I prefer soccer out of them all. I love Martial Arts and believe they firmly make a difference in someones life. Weight lifting and general fitness is something I try to practice daily. One of my goals is to get a major form college and get a well paid job. I'm a hard worker and I always try to put all my effort towards something. I think the world will change constantly but human nature will always be the same. I want to do my part as a human to make sure that society is uplifted and not brought down. I think people should treat everyone with respect and people in general should love people. To love ones' self, one must love all humans. Lastly, I think education is the key to success; knowledge is power.

  5. Am I really who I say I am? Well, it’s me, Joselyn, “super senior”, and I’m extremely excited to see the light at the end of the tunnel and to be graduating with my associates in arts at the end of the spring 2013!! I absolutely love everything Hello Kitty, and I like pink. My favorite subject in school would have to be math, but I have a strange love for writing. I know where I want to go and there’s nothing will stop me from getting there. I am very determined to be the best I can possibly be at whatever I put my mind to. With that being said, I want to further my education at North Carolina University of Greensboro, or Winston Salem State University, but I am leaving all of my options wide open. As of right now I am leaning towards nursing as my major once attending college, because I love to help people if there is anything possible that I can do. My grandmother and my mom are both nurses, so I’ll be a third generation nurse in my family. I love to travel. As of this very moment, I have to say that my very best loved piece of literature would be Othello. One of my true hobbies has been a cheerleader for six years, but my absolute passion is volleyball. I am the only child, and I would say that I am very nice, sociable, and you will catch me with a smile on my face most of the time. I’m very helpful, sometimes even too helpful, but I just love to see everyone happy. In a friend, I value honesty and loyalty. In the world around me, I believe everyone should be themselves, and not hinder the world from their real individuality of themselves. I have come to find that the deepest and most hidden entity about a person, is what the outside world cherishes, and remembers the most. My place in the world is to be true to myself, and I choose to do so by living my life to the fullest for myself, and not how others believe I should live it.

  6. where to start i am Alberto Ortiz i think a lot of things make me unique from everybody, but that's vague. no one person is like another but one thing that i have that i believe sets me apart from most people is my tolerance and understanding of new and odd things. i am not one to judge people badly because of what they like or who they are. i wouldn't stray away from someone just because their black, white, gay, straight, Buddhist, or Christan I believe that small details like that doesn't make the person or who they are. What i want to be or my future goals? I want to be an artist of many types drawing, photography, and design i want to be able to express my ideas as freely as possible. I have many goals in life from being successful enough to stop my parents from worrying about me to something as greedy as being rich but my biggest goal is to become someone in this world, someone that i can be proud of. I don't know how i am gonna get there or when but i figure it out as i go. Simple stuff about my interests are i like video games my favorite of all is Halo. I think i watch to much television but the three favorite shows has to be Adventure Time, The Walking Dead and The Big Bang Theory. The movies i have been raving over so far has been Scott Pilgrim Vs the World and Hunger Games. Sadly am not much of a reader so i cant really say i have a favorite book but then would explain why i struggle in English class.

  7. Am I really who I say I am? Well, I would say that I growing into the person I want to become. My reason beyond this is because sometimes I can categorize myself to be a certain way, but then later on I find myself nothing like what I would categorize myself. I’m not perfect so I feel that I make mistakes just as well as other. But you live and you learn. To live and to learn shows growth within yourself, so that’s the type of person I am, I live to learn. However, I am unique in my own little way. My reason for this is I’m shy at time, but I also have a great sense of humor when I’m around my friends. I feel that you are only given life once, so why not enjoy it. I’m a nice person until someone pushes my button, and then there is a side that isn’t pleasant. However, I am a more introverted person, which means I don’t like to hang around large crowds because I’m more to myself. I enjoy music, because it’s like my escape from the outside world sometimes. During my free time listening to music is all I ever do. My future plans are to attended college and to become a lawyer. I plan on making my family proud, however, I did make a promise to my grandfather before he past that I would work hard and become the person I set out to become. My place in the world is to simply be myself and to live my life to the fullest regardless of what others think.

  8. I believe that in the past years I have become the person I am today. The struggles and trials that I have faced, both outside and inside school, made me who I am today. Out of all the things I’ve learned I hold trust and loyalty above all other things. I have learned to give everyone an equal chance and to never judge someone based on their past or present. The thing that makes me unique is that I’ve never cared about race and the only thing that matters to me are an individual’s personality. My future goals in life are to graduate from a business school and go into business for myself. I hope that one day I can repay all the people that have encouraged me and made a difference in my life. I feel that by owning my own business I can make a difference not only in my employee’s life, but the world as well. The one thing I worry most about is how the worlds are becoming so centered on trade, exports, and technology. If parts of these three things were to come to a halt then society would also stop. That is why I feel it is so important to be an individual and follow the choices you have sent for yourself not someone else’s.

  9. What sets me apart from everyone else is that I'm practically an android and I'm able to get people to something even when I'm not trying. Some people seem to be afraid of me, even though I've never been trying to scare them. I don't express my emotions often, which probably makes me unpredictable. I care very little for my physical appearance. I spend most of my free time studying things that interest me (martial arts, astrophysics, etc.) , drawing, exercising, and watching tv. I don't have a favorite tv show but some of the shows I watch include Supernatural, Young Justice, and the Walking Dead. I'm a metal head, but I listen to other things excluding rapcore, R&B, emo, and pop. One of my long-term goals is to attend a four year university and study engineering or at the very least gaming and animation. I'm socially retarded. Since the age 11, I've had a cynical view of the world, but I'm slowly changing; although, I sometimes wonder if that's a bad thing in my case.) If I value anything, then I suppose those things would include power, loyalty, strong-will, honesty, and intelligence. I guess my challenge in life is to learn positive emotions.

  10. Darn Right I'm who I say I'am. I'm unque because i balance the ignorant tendies of being young and black with my intellence. I act loud, somewhat blunt, and funny; but I only act this way to sheild the pain and frustations I feel going through my life. I try not to stress about my problems because they are movitavition to be succesfull. I plan the attend the business school at UNC-Chapel Hill and get mba. I'ma double major in Accounting and Business Admistration so,I can learn how to run a business and work in a business.

  11. Who am I? I am who I am and that’s the whole point of my life. I don’t really mind what others think of me in the end. Everyone has their different opinions and I tend to voice mine pretty loud around people that I’m close to. For those who don’t know me personally I tend to be timid and quiet; however, when I’m around my friends and family it’s a totally different story. I’m just a country girl that loves going to church and I try my best to live by the word of God the best I can. Since I’ve been old enough to remember I’ve been in the kitchen with my mama. My long time dream has to become a professional pastry chef so that I can open my own shop. Now that I’m fixing to graduate high school and I’ve been accepted into my dream college, and I’m going to be studying Baking and Party Arts for two years it seems like my life is slowly falling into place. I’ve always been the girl that has to have everything that I do perfect because I don’t want to do something half way and be represented by something that is half crap. If I’m going to put my name on something it’s going to be the best that I can put forward hands down. No one in this world is perfect although we have to strive for perfection if we ever want to accomplish our goals in life and this is actually what I’m doing. I’m not the type of girl that goes out and parties all the time, and I’m not saying that anything is wrong with that but that’s just not me. I believe that God has a plan for me and everything that happens in my life is for a particular reason. I am who I am and I wouldn’t change a single thing that has happened in my life. I’m blessed in so many ways and I thank God for what He has blessed me with everyday.

  12. Yes I'm who I say I'm but when comes to different people I'm not all ways the same. It's not that I'm trying to be fake but it's because i sometimes don't trust people, but the people I don't trust are like brothers and sisters to me. The real me is a loving, church boy who is sometimes afraid but I do what I need to need. I love music, I play music, and I write music. I love halo and UFC fighting because i can relieve stress. Two goals of mine is to play music professional and work with computer; I don't know how thats going to work but I know God has plan for me.

  13. What makes me uniquely me? I'd have to say my mind, my thought process, my creativity. I've got two hands like most people. A head, hair, eyes. Believe or not every has a brain too. What sets me apart from any of the other 6 billion people is my own creativity. Nobody can or will approach a situation or a problem like me. I want to be a writer, and without my creativity and my own personal vision, I'm nothing.

  14. I am who I say I am. I am Sierra Ross, a true individual. I have my own opinions and I tend to express them. I don’t try to make people follow my opinions, but I will not let them convince me that my opinions are wrong. My favorite thing to do is ride horses. It is my passion. There is no feeling like being on my horse and running through a field. I feel free. Horses give me hope that there are still pure spirits in this world. I see myself as being unique because I put others feelings and happiness before my own. Most put themselves first, but I would rather see my friends and family happy. I am who I am and I cannot change that.

  15. I don't believe that I am who I say I am; but, I do believe that I am becoming that person I say I want to be. What I feel that defines me as my own unique person is my determination to be a successful mom, wife, and student. I've had many struggles and many obstacles that have gotten in the way, but God has always made a way for me around them. Most people have seen me as a sweet, smart and christian like lady, but I have had doubt in my spiritual/religious life and low self-esteem, academically. Aside from that, I'm glad that I found something that I absolutely love, which is singing. I feel that as I continue the rest of my life, it will definitely involve music and serving God. I know that God has put so many people in my life that have helped and guided me on my journey. I know that there is much to be done and with my determination I will become the person i desire so much to be.

  16. I feel that within recent events I have a strong sense of who I am. People have told me that I seem unfriendly and stoic. For the most part this is correct; however, the truth is I just have a hard time expressing myself and my emotions. In my head things make sense but when I say them they come out wrong. I have also been told that I am too blunt and mean. I realize these things about myself and I like the way I am. The most unique thing about me is my ability to bounce back. I have been through many “trails” in my life and each time I get pushed downed I get back up. When it comes to friends I have a hard time trusting people, which I don’t see as a good thing rather than bad. I want friends who understand me and who I can trust. I like anime, x box, and being a nerd. I enjoy watching animated movies and independent films. In my free time I play chess and practice Karate. I feel as if my past is so complicated that I want the rest of my life to be simply. My plans for the future are just to enjoy life: have a good job, nice house, and plenty of friends and family. When it comes down to the nature of the world, I think the world is full of terrible people and the challenge of life is to find the good ones.

  17. I think there are a lot of things that make me unique. I'm a little wierd but it makes me me. If I really get into a tv show, I will obsess over it forever! Anyone who is my friend on Facebook will know that. I also love to listen to music, mostly rock and metal. I've gotten really into classic rock lately so that's usually what I'm listening to in my car and I usually listen to it way too loud. I blew the speakers in my car so they're kinda crappy right now because I haven't gotten them fixed yet. I also like to read but mostly I read teen supernatural type stuff like Twilight and Harry Potter. My favorite holiday is Halloween because I love scary stuff and dressing up. :) My plans for the future are to either go to NC State or ECU (but I'm leaning toward ECU right now) and study Psychology and Forensic Science or Criminal Justice. I want to be a Criminal Profile because I used to be addicted to the show Criminal Minds and I thought it looked cool. I like trying to figure stuff out by looking at what people do. I think there are way too many criminals that get away with the stuff they do just because people don't find enough evidence to convict them so that also contributes to my decision to want to work in Criminal Justice.

  18. Am I who I say I am? No. I tell people that I am this outgoing person who loves to have fun, is always smiling, and is always there for others. I contradict what I say very much. Yes, I am an outgoing person and I do love to have fun, but there are somethings that have happened and are happening in my life that make me feel like a depressed and sad person on the inside. Most of the time I do keep a smile on my face because I don't want others to see how I truly feel on the inside. I try to be there for others even if they are not a relative or close friend because I would want someone to be there for me. Although I am an open person, I don't allow myself to be so open so that someone could truly see how I feel and help me. Am I who I say I am? Yes, I am a dedicated and hardworking daughter, student, and fiance. My academics in high school have not always been at their best but these past couple years, I have been working my butt off to pull up my grades and make my family proud. It's hard having a step parent and to have a father who lives five hours away; anyone who is or have ever been in my position could understand. As a daughter and step daughter, I feel that I try my best to please my parents, but just any other normal teen, I sometimes feel that my best isn't good enough. It's already hard enough trying to please my biological father, but pleasing someone who's only been in my life for three and a half years is even harder. As a fiance, I try my best to please my better half, because he has always been the main person there for me. When times at home wasn't going as they should and abuse was happening, he was there to shield me and take care of me like a man should. Because he is my best friend, I do not only feel obligated but I feel motivated and dedicated to do my best for him. Am I who I say I am? I've come to the conclusion that I am not who I say that I am. While still trying to find out who I am, I have dreams, standards, and ideas of who I want to be. When I come to terms and is happy with the person that I am, then I can answer that question.

    1. But to continue, what makes Brandi unique? Her smile, her laugh, her unconditional love and generosity, and her heart. I am totally obsessed with the color pink!If it's one thing I love to do, that's singing and watching cartoons. I can't say that, that sets me apart from anyone but it's what makes me,me. I have a different way of expressing myself than others. Sometimes I like to think that I was a boy in a different life. I say that because, when I try to express myself about something sad or hurtful to me, I get angry and annoyed. I try to control but sometimes I just can't. I have a little OCD; every morning that I wake up I have to put my left shoe on before my right and I have to use my right hand to open doors or my day feels weird. Another thing that I believe makes me unique is my passion to write short stories about love and the disadvantages and obstacles in life. My uncle has told me that I need to become a motivational speaker. I love to write speeches that encourage people to make a change about something, just as governors and mayors do in politics. To close, I feel that what makes me,me is my name. Not the way I spell it or how I write it, but what it represents. Brandi represents an 18 year old girl who has been through tough times in her life, is unsure about who she truly is, but sees who people want her to be. Brandi is a girl I know and that girl is me.

  19. What makes me unique? I have discovered a few things that set me apart. I feel like I am strange because whenever I discover something I always ask why and how and if I can replicate it. When it comes to my interests, I love music. I will listen to practically anything but I don't usually enjoy it. I listen for a sense of understanding in the music and its make up. I always search for that one song that sense chills up my spine and gets me to rock my head a little, but if I had to pick two favorite genres then it would be metalcore and classical. I have learned through my study of music that they both play on the same scales and that scale is something I love to hear. I am a huge sci-fi geek and I am neck deep in Star Wars, Halo, Lord of The Rings, Predator and Alien etc. I read mostly sci-fi novels and nine times out of ten I am looking up it up on my computer. I guess I am drawn to this genre because it explores the unknown of space and secrets that science and the universe hold for us. Sometimes I feel like I was born to early, since I want to space travel but I guess its never to late to be born haha! My plans for the future involve different things, I defiantly want to major in music since I already write it and play it but I also want to be a 3D animator since I am an artist as well. The reason for this goes back to me as a child marveling at some of my favorite heroes from comics coming to life in movies and I always said I wanted to be that person that creates and helps bring to life characters like that but now my goal is to work for my favorite gaming companies, 343 Industries and Bungie since they have produced the Halo series and my absolute favorite two characters Master Chief and Cortana. Well that is me and a nutshell.

  21. I am the person i appear to be. I am a kind hearted person who have hopes and dreams. My personality, my goal, is to make other people happy and loved. I think i am unique and strive to make everyone i see or talk to smile. I am a person that doesn't judge i feel that it is not my right to judge someone by the way they look or dress. I am in love with music and nature. I like any types of movies and i get alone with pretty much everybody.I look for in a friend that has the same characteristics as I. They have to have hope and planning to make something of themselves; they have to have a positive outlook on life and i know a person cant be positive all the time, but for a person to see that things can be worst and keep trying to reach their goal is wonderful to me. I look at the world as hope because everyday that i am living i am the person that control what happens in my life. I deal with life problems everyday and i try to keep my head up and push forward. I live according to how i was raised, but i also have my own moral in which i follow, but some people may see them as wrong. I have a fear of not being successful and that is the motive that is pushing my success. I am everything i seem to be.

  22. I think what makes me uniquely me is my willingness to treat everybody equal and as kind as the next person. I genuinely hope to inspire other people to be likewise; one of my goals is to make kindness a contagious disease. I have many dreams but my top dream is to become a leader in medical service in underserviced communities – I think everyone deserves equality in medical care regardless of social class. Upon achieving my top goal in life, I hope to become a well established fashion designer. I’ve never met a fashion designer with a doctorate degree but hopeful I change that stereotype of designers being dummies. I hope to slaughter every stereotype and statistic that has been thrown my way and in doing so encourage others to follow the trend. I have a fascination with fashion and people who are brave enough to be different and unique. Everyone has something that sets them apart from the next person whether it be a flaw or a blessing; we should embrace our creativity and identity. Overall, I hope to spread kindness and joy throughout the world and inspire people to do likewise. In addition, I hope to become a leading medical doctor and secondly a revolutionary fashion designer. Look out for my Dr. Hicks, the only doctor you’ll see working in his own fashion line!

  23. Am i who i say i am? For the most part, yes. Im not like the stereotypical african american man, i value my education and my goals. I consider myself very uniquely hilarious although i use humor to hide the frustrations and obstacles in my life but i am also very shy, a huge procrastinator (example: this late blog post), and a very lovable person who no one can stay mad at and can get along with anyone. I am also unique for the simple fact that i can get inside anyones head, which motivates me to be a psychologist. I want to leave this ol' raggidy town to allow the rest of the world to get a good taste of what i have to offer to them. On a serious note, i believe i am who i say i am because i don't hide the truth, i can see things for what they really are. I have really bad trust issues, so i don't believe much what people say sometimes or i question it. My favorite pet is a dog because dogs go hard and they are friendly at the same time. I love to watch horror movies that scares me and comedy movies. I watch romance sometimes too. I secretly like to read books but only the ones that keep me entertained like mysteries or drama. My favorite type of music is R&B and i like to listen to some country and rap/hip hop. My favorite r&b artists are The Dream, The weeknd, the old chris brown, Trey songz, r kelly, *cough* justin beiber *cough*, and mariah carey. I have too many rap/hip hop artists favorites to name so ima skip that. But to continue, i like to stay open minded as possible so that i can understand more things in the world. That is me. I would have much more to say but ill save it for any questions you may have.

  24. I feel like I know who I am, and who I going be. I feel that I am a person who takes action based on my emotion. This has made me become who I am, but it gets me in trouble a lot of the time. Like in school, when I get in trouble or if I have a death in the family I wouldn’t do work for like a week straight (for example this blog post.) However, in is helpful for things like sports and test because I am motivated based on my emotions too. For example, when people doubt me it makes me strive to do better, and prove them wrong. My future goals are to become a psychologist or an athletic trainer. The reason is I love to help others become a better then, either physically or psychologically. However, my dream is to become an Olympic champion in wrestling. I’ve had this dream since 8th grade when I watched the ‘08 Olympics.
